Isabella Laws path to her dream job was fairly standard in the beginning, then when an opportunity was offered to work with one of best friends in an industry perfect to utilise her double degree in Business and Communications the career stars aligned and she has never looked back. We spoke to Bella about her role at Saski Collection, found out about a day in the life, her advice for aspiring career gals and her favourite part about Saski HQ in our latest #mymoderncareer interview!
Hi Bella, thank you so much for joining us for TDP's #mymoderncareer series!
We would love to know more about your role at Saski Collection.... Since joining the Saski team I have the responsibility of running all social media, PR and marketing for the business. That's a very broad overview of what I do, but working in a small team means you need to do a bit of everything! I do everything from posting Instagram content to creating EDMs, organising photo shoots, creating campaigns, writing press releases, working with influencers, the list goes on haha! There is a lot involved in marketing which is why I love it so much, no day is ever the same.
What did your path to your dream job to kick-start your career look like? I feel like my path was pretty standard in the beginning, I went straight into university from high school and graduated with a double degree of Business and Communications at the end of 2016 where I majored in Marketing, PR and Journalism. After university I was working in retail, and I was a little unsure of where I wanted to go/what my dream job actually was! Tammy reached out to me and offered me the job knowing I was looking for something in this industry and I'm super grateful to her for the opportunity. She is the reason I got my foot in the door and since working for Saski I've gained invaluable experience.
What is a day in the life like at Saski HQ? At the moment I come in to the office in the morning and have a quick meeting with Amy (our general manager), then get stuck into any urgent emails that need answering. After that I usually check on all Saski social media, respond to any comments and check out all our #saskigirls who tag us. And from there it honestly depends on what I've got to do on my to-do list. Last week we had a 20% off site-wide sale in conjunction with Vogue Australia so I worked on creating all the content for that, and we also are about to launch our brand new Mesh Collection so I've been getting all the product descriptions ready for the website and sending out PR packages to our social media influencers!
"I feel like the most important lesson I've learnt is that no university degree can prepare you for what marketing is like in a real business setting."
What is the biggest career lesson you have learnt so far? I feel like the most important lesson I've learnt is that no university degree can prepare you for what marketing is like in a real business setting. A whole lot of what I've done at Saski I learnt on the job or from our general manager Amy, who used to work in Marketing in Sydney. I feel like I've learnt to just go with the flow and be open-minded with everything I do!
Advice for our aspiring career ladies who want to get into this industry? Take the opportunities you're given and be prepared to put in the work, it's a very competitive industry. I want to emphasise the fact that there is a steep learning curve and it can be overwhelming, it definitely wasn’t easy, but marketing is such a fun industry to work in and is definitely worth the effort if it's something you're really wanting to do.

If you had to pick one career highlight to date, what would it be? It's definitely a close tie between going to New York Fashion Week last year to show Saski Collection in the Australian Showcase, and being a finalist for the Mumbrella CommsCon Awards for 'Social Media Community Manager of the Year'.
What is your favourite part about the Saski Collection office? I'm so lucky to get to work alongside one of my best friends since literally year 8 of school (Tammy), so that is definitely a bonus for my role! Otherwise, the fact that our office is pet friendly is the best. I just got a little baby sausage dog named Luna, and am super grateful to get to bring her to work with me everyday.
Thank you so much Bella for sharing your career story so far and some really valuable insight and advice for young, motivated, career driven gals like yourself who are navigating their own career path and making those important decisions about their future!
