"By time-blocking tasks, you don’t lose time switching between tasks and get ‘in the zone’ to be more productive."What does a 'typical' day (if that exists!) look for you right now? Day to day, I am usually at my desk. Majority of my work is done via emails and online. Then there a days where I am out of the office coordinating photo shoots or running product launch events. I also often help pack the orders, especially during busy times, so I guess I just work on whatever part of the business needs me day to day. What are your go-to productivity hacks/tips/tricks? Time-blocking saves so much time! So for example, instead of responding to 1 Instagram DM at a time, I go into the Inbox once or twice a day and respond to them all at once. By time-blocking tasks, you don’t lose time switching between tasks and get ‘in the zone’ to be more productive. What is in store for you both personally and professionally in 2020? My fiancé and I are getting married this year so it’s a very exciting time for us. I also set my New Year’s Resolutions to travel more and see more live music, so it’s a very fun year of exploring and adventures. Professionally, I am working on getting the brand ‘retail ready’ so that we can hopefully get the products in store. We would ideally love to work with a retailer with a chain of stores so Tribe Skincare is ‘available online at www.tribeskincare.com.au and in-store exclusively at …….’. Fingers and toes crossed for us! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and thank you so much for sharing some insight into your business journey and work style! I cannot wait to see what is in store for Tribe Skincare for the rest of 2020. Shop the range here and follow along on Insta babes! Hayley x
Talking business with Kayla Houlihan, founder of Tribe Skincare
Oh hey Kayla, welcome to our #bethegirl interview series! I cannot wait to chat all things business, productivity tips, goals and of course...skin care!
First up, tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My life completely changed 2 years ago when I launched a skincare brand for sensitive skin called Tribe Skincare. After high school, I studied for 4 years to be a secondary school teacher and taught for 2 years. So to now be running a rapidly growing skincare brand is not where I expected life to take me!
How did the Tribe Skincare journey begin?
Once I left teaching, I studied Beauty Therapy and opened a skin clinic with my sister. We had the clinic for 3 years and were always on the hunt for skincare ranges to retail at our salon. So many of our clients had sensitive skin and couldn’t use most skincare brands, so we wanted to find something that was truly gentle on even the most sensitive skin. When we couldn’t find it, I discovered a huge gap in the market and set out to create it. It was important to me that the range was all-natural, vegan-friendly and Australian made. I knew this was very important to consumers as well so this became the guidelines of our entire range of skincare, and now, mineral makeup.
What do you love most about being a woman in business?
I love the endless opportunities for creativity that running a business and skincare brand brings. I get to work across all areas from product development to customer service so it keeps work very interesting. 2 years in, the ‘job’ now gives me great flexibility to have a work/life balance so I can take time away to travel and still run the business from my computer.
