Melbourne sisters Liana and Carla grew up learning the importance of skin care from their mum and would experiment with her skincare and beauty tools. This grew into a love and passion for skin care and ultimately launching their very own skin care business called Kahlia Skin. I sat down with Liana and Carla to talk all about their journey of turning their passion into their business, skin care rituals and rejuvenation and the benefits of LED Masks, working together and what is next for Kahlia skin in 2021.
Hi Liana and Carla, welcome to our #mymoderncareer interview series! First up, as co-founders, how did you meet and what are your respective roles in Kahlia Skin?
Kahlia Skin is an Australian based skincare company that is co-founded by two Melbourne sisters, Liana and Carla, this is where the name Kahlia originated from. Our love for skincare saw us work diligently to bring our visions to life and create skincare that is simple, effective and enjoyable. We both have different strengths that we use to our advantage when working together. Liana leads the marketing side of the business and Carla manages our customer service and whole sale division. We are always working together on the business, from projects to new products. We are forever researching, innovating and trailing products.
Liana and Carla, we would love to know a bit about you and your backgrounds!
Growing up our mother was very passionate about skincare and beauty which played a major role in teaching us the important of skincare. We would always experiment with our mother’s skincare and beauty tools and as we got older, we spent time researching and trialing new skincare products on ourselves. As teenagers and now as adults, we have both been very fortunate to have clear and healthy skin as we would take care of our skin and follow a skincare routine morning and night. Because of our healthy, glowing skin, we would often get asked what skincare we used and if any of our friends needed a recommendation for skincare, were the go to gals.
How did the idea and concept for Kahlia Skin start and what was the inspiration or starting point for your brand?
Having a love and passion for skincare was what inspired us to start our own skincare business. We would often get facials that incorporated LED light therapy because we absolutely loved the benefits of it. As the results were amazing, we wanted to purchase an at home LED light therapy mask that we could use in between our salon treatments. Although with our busy lifestyle we knew that purchasing an LED light therapy mask that forced us to stay in the one place with our eyes closed for 20 minutes was something we would struggle to do,this is where the idea of a wireless and non-obstructive LED light therapy mask originated from. Not being plugged into a wall with our eyes closed meant we can treat our skin and still continue to do the things we love. We are all about creating and sharing the benefits of our products with our customers.

Once you decided you wanted to create a Light Therapy Mask for skin rejuvenation, what was the first step you took to create the Kahlia Skin mask?
Our first step when creating our LED mask was ensuring it would be simple, effective and efficient. As we both have busy lifestyles we know that it is so easy to sometimes neglect our skincare routine. We wanted to provide a skincare tool that would allow people to enjoy treating their skin, rather than finding it a chore. We wanted something different from the other LED light therapy masks on the market. As most LED masks require you to be plugged into a wall and have your eyes closed, we knew that a wireless and non-obstructive LED light therapy mask was the perfect skincare tool for gals who are multi-taskers and have a busy lifestyle.
Let's talk all things skin rejuvenation and LED Masks! First of all, what are the benefits?
Led light therapy is a skincare treatment that uses varied wavelengths of light to treat a number of skin concerns. Each light therapy has a variety of benefits that have been clinically tested and trailed all over the world. Red light therapy is used for its anti-ageing benefits is also believed to reduce cytokines, which cause inflammation as well as improving circulation, which can give you a healthier glow. Blue light therapy has anti-bacterial benefits and therefore used in acne treatment. Talk us through the different therapeutic light wavelengths and what each one can do for different skin types and concerns?
Our LED light therapy mask has 3 therapeutic wavelengths, each with their own benefits.
- Red Light Therapy (wavelength between 620nm to 750nm), slows down the signs of ageing by stimulating collagen and elastin production. Reduces skin inflammation and great for healing. Blue Light Therapy (wavelength between 405nm to 420nm), kills acne-causing bacteria that lives on the skin, treats breakouts, blemishes and stubborn hormonal acne
- Yellow Light Therapy (wavelength of between 590nm to 620nm), improves skin clarity, texture and overall appearance. Detoxes your skin by boosting lymphatic flow and increasing cellular growth that promotes cell-turnover

What advice would you give for anyone who is thinking about starting their own business or in the early stages of their biz?
Starting a business can be difficult, and it does come with challenges. The best advice we could share to anyone thinking of starting their own business is to not be afraid to take risks, trust yourself and take on all challenges that stand in your way. It might not work the first time, but don’t give up. If it something you are truly passionate about, keep working on it and don’t let anything stop you from following your dreams.
What is next for Kahlia Skin and your plans for 2021?
We are excited to announce that this year we will be launching two new Australian made skincare products, this is the first time we are sharing this exciting news! The products are a surprise, although we want to share a little clue with you, hydrate and glow! Stay tuned!
