Living in a city can drain you. Constant noise, bright lights and non-stop activity can make it hard to switch off and relax. Going on holiday is always a great way to relax from work and the stresses of everyday life, but it also offers the opportunity to get back in touch with nature in a way that cities just don’t allow. Some call this “ecotourism”, a version of travelling that encompasses visiting natural environments that need help, whether through conservation or financial means, and focusing your visit on exploring and observing the wildlife on offer. Plenty of places can provide this for you, but here are a few of our favourites.
Norway
Norway offers stunning views of snowcapped mountains, beautiful lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, and fantastic cloud cover that will make you feel tiny. Norway is an excellent destination for those who think they need a bit of peace; its quiet ways offer a great spot for relaxation and reflection. If you like to hike or bike, Norway offers plenty of amazing routes that will get you up close and personal with nature. A boat ride can provide the same if you are less of a fan of the active stuff.
Tasmania
Tasmania is Australia’s smallest state, but don’t let its size deceive you. The pink granite mountains, beaches and lakes are unlike anywhere else. The Freycinet Peninsula is one of Australia's most gorgeous national parks - don’t forget to bring your camera. Tasmania has many walking trails to entertain you and bring you back to nature, but it would be remiss not to note that Tasmania is well known for its foodie scene. The emphasis lies with seafood - you can find freshly caught fish and crustaceans everywhere; just look out for an excellent Tasmanian sea food restaurant.
Kenya
Kenya offers some of the most extraordinary wildlife out there. Of course, plenty of people travel to Kenya to see the savannas, full of lions and elephants and giraffes. But have you considered all the landscapes Kenya has to offer? Alongside the famous savannahs, there are mountains, rainforests, beaches, deserts and lakes to explore. The coastline is really something else. Their coral reefs are not something to miss, so look out for any diving opportunities.
Alaska
Alaska will be a great choice for anyone out there that likes the cold. Alaskan landscapes include massive glaciers, beautiful forests and scenic coastlines. You have so many routes to trek, cycle, or drive in order to get the most out of your trip to Alaska. Boat trips are excellent to get up close and personal with the water, but camping in the forests will get you under the stars. To make the most out of your time, try to go for a week at the very least. There’s just so much to do.
Travel kindly
Remember to be mindful in your travels to these locations. Ecotourism is all about giving back to the land and protecting it from the dangers that tourism can often bring. If you have the time, why not try dedicating one day to volunteering to help out in one way or another? Maybe there are reconstruction efforts in one landscape that your help could be invaluable for.
Love,
