Are you passionate about beauty, skin care, self care, make-up and helping others to feel their best? Then the beauty industry might be the perfect career choice for you. So what does it take to be succssful in the beauty industry and where do you start? Let’s dive into this RN!
Complete the right training
Clients rely on you to have the necessary training and experience to treat them properly and safely. Find out what certifications and training are needed in the areas that you want to cover and take them. Most of them can be studied online or around other commitments so you can still work your day job while you’re studying.
Do market research
Find out which products and treatments are popular right now. Offering services that people don’t really want isn’t going to help you build your clientele. Keep up to date on all of the latest products and trends in order to provide the treatments your clients love.
Get some experience
Finding opportunities to get experience can be difficult. Ask around at local beauty salons if they are willing to let you shadow one of their therapists or perform some treatments under supervision. You can also ask friends and family for help too. They will be more than happy to let you practice your new-found skills on them. By getting some experience under your belt, you can feel more confident in your skills.
Decide if you’re going to work or be self-employed
Beauty therapists often work in specialist beauty spas and salons like the Bondi Lash & Beauty Clinic or they work for themselves, either by renting a space somewhere or offering a mobile service to clients in their own homes. Decide which you would prefer so that you can plan towards this. There are pros and cons to each option.
Learn business skills
If you’re planning to be self-employed, you’re going to have to learn a lot of business and marketing skills too. Find online courses that teach you the basics of business accounting, admin and social media promotion. In time, they’ll become second nature to you, but it can seem overwhelming at first. As beauty is a visual medium, learning how to use social media such as Instagram and Tik Tok can help you to grow your following and potentially convert them into clients. If you’re not sure where to start, follow some salons or therapists that you love and take notice of what they are doing on their accounts. You’ll soon get a feel for what works for you and your engagement will start building in no time.
It’s good practice to have the right insurance in place for your business. This can protect you if a client is unhappy with your service or is injured on your premises. Check with your area to see which insurances are recommended for your particular business. You might feel like this is an unnecessary cost, but it can save you a lot of money further down the line and keep you out of legal trouble too.
