8 tips for empowering your team

One of the most important things to remember when you are running a business is that your team are more than just employees and are the foundation of any successful company.. They are people with personal goals and future plans, and it is so important that you are empowering them to continue to chase their dreams – no matter what. You may not think that they want more from their job, but most of the time they actually do! Remember how it felt when you were the employee and not the employer? Remember what it was like to feel like you weren’t taken seriously? Well, your team are currently in that position and you want to be the boss that motivates, inspires and empowers the people around them! 

People put a lot of trust in you when you are an employer. Not only are they trusting you to pay their salary on time, they trust that you are going to develop their skills and give them something to aim for. People come to work for more than money: they come to work to feel like they matter and they are serving a purpose. It’s your job to step up and give them someone to look up to and a big part of that is going to be in ensuring that you help them to glow up. You need to give your team the permission they need to take action and take control of their career – which means that you need to trust them to do better! When you empower your staff, you are ensuring that they are more productive, motivated and inspired to do more. Of course sometimes this means that you train them to leave you, but then you essentially are the person that changed their future – and that’s pretty amazing right? It’s a good way to ensure that you are networking with future talent!

You need to give others the tools and skills to so this, if they know what you know and do what you do, they are equal to you. You hire people to contribute where you need them to and you outsource to others that will be able to support your business. 

The key is to learn where the help is and maximize those working for you at the same time. Develop With Delegation
One of the hardest things to do as a business leader is to hand over pieces of your business to other people. However, it’s shortsighted of you to try and do everything by yourself. Eventually, you won’t be able to outsource every single service, and this is where you would upskill the talent that you already have in your business. Delegating to others to take the work off your plate makes your load easier, but it is a missed opportunity if you outsource it away from your business. Instead, choose to work with an employee who would suit the workload and upskill them! You can develop and grow their capabilities and give them a real shot at a proper future in that area in your business.

Make Your Expectations Clear
You are not going to invest in staff who aren’t prepared to put in the work, but you will need to be clear about where you will invest. Setting expectations doesn’t mean that you should micromanage your employees. Instead, it means that you are giving your staff the permission that they need to take action in the office. If you allow your employees to make their own decisions, you are going to give them the power they need to know that they are in control. People are allowed to control their own destinies, and it’s up to you to ensure that they know they can! Employees often wait for instruction, and you need to make sure that you are crystal clear about yours.

Offer Autonomy
You can teach someone how to move from point A to point B, but it won’t always be a linear journey. Sometimes, your team may go from A to B via XYZ and that is okay! Make it clear that you want people to learn in a way that suits them, so if you have something new to teach your team, ask them how they would like to learn. Some people may like to learn digitally where others choose to learn visually with you showing them exactly what to do. If you allow people space and freedom in their learning without micromanaging them afterwards, you can allow them to make some small mistakes from which they will also learn. You are not the best person to every single project, which is why you hired other people. 

Offer The Right Resources
If you want your team to be comfortable and learn well, then you need to give them the right resources to do it. When you first start empowering people coming into your business, you will often fall into a trap where your employees believe that you will solve all the problems. The thing is, you will be able to create far more intelligent individuals when you offer them the right resources to learn. If you provide them the correct training, they will be able to solve the problem themselves, which makes a huge difference to the way that you do business. Be the sounding board for new ideas and offer suggestions, but it’s key that you allow your staff to trip every once in a while – let them come to you and then show them the right way to do things.

Provide feedback
If you want your employees to be independent, you need to provide feedback to let them know how they are doing. Debrief and be specific with it so that they know where they went wrong and how to improve. You can’t hope to develop individuals and not teach them the best next steps, so be honest and open about what you need from them as well as asking what they need from you. Telling someone that they have done well doesn’t help; be specific about WHAT they have done well at and explain the impact that they have had on others, too. If you are offering feedback, you can bet that your staff will be far happier individuals and work better at the same time!

Ask For Ideas
Some of your employees may have some great ideas about what they’d like to achieve at work and they may suggest different educational courses they could do with you. You can take the opinions and suggestions on board and show them that you are open to being receptive about their ideas. You’ll empower them by giving them confidence to ask for the training they want and you’ll also help your business by opening up to new ideas put forward by your staff. You can always improve, and the people working on the front line are able to see it first hand. They know what needs improvement and you can help them to achieve those improvements!

A lot of the time, employers don’t realize that people thrive when they know what’s going on in a business. If you are communicating with your staff, you’re going to help them to understand the vision of your business and what they should be aiming for. Business should not be a secret when you are entrusting an office full of staff to be successful with yours. 

Recognize and Reward Hard Work
Lastly, empower people by showing them that you care about their progress. Applaud their efforts and make sure that they know that you are serious about their progress in your business. People respect employers who are innovative and take action as much as employers respect proactive individuals who want to do well. Don’t be stingy with how you thank people and make sure that serious work garners serious rewards!
