How to make yourself stand out at business events (virtual included!)

If you are looking for alternative ways to find new customers for your business, you should consider attending some business events, whether they are in person or more commonly in 2020  a ‘virtual’ event rather than actually physical. Either way, ensuring you stand out in the crowd and to maximise the benefits and potential opportunities is critical. It’s a great way to get some face time (again this could be virtual via video call!) with potential customers and put your business on the map. The problem is, there’s a lot of competition out there and people will interact with hundreds of businesses over the course of the event. Unless you do something different and unique, you could easily blend into the crowd and be forgotten about. Lets look at some steps you can take to make a big impression and make your business stand out at events for all the right reasons.

Always Be Professional
This is the most important thing because you need to make sure that you give the right impression to potential customers. If you appear disorganized and you are not very professional, customers will leave with a poor impression of your business and they will not give you a second thought after the event. Before you attend, you should spend some time thinking about the message that you are sending and see if there are ways that you can make your business more professional.

Give Away Something Useful
A great way to increase brand awareness and in some cases provide contact details on something more interesting than a business card is to have some unique and interesting branded products. If you want to make yourself stand out, you need to make sure that you give away something useful! So many companies will be giving out (boring) stuff like pens and bags, so if you come up with something more useful, you will be more memorable. Why not think about air fresheners, bottle openers, or memory sticks? These kinds of things that people use on a daily basis are a much better option than useless things that will just get thrown in the bin anyway.

Create A Buzz Before The Event
It’s important that you create an eye catching stand and give out some great freebies to entice people, but if you really want to stand out, you need to create a buzz before the event. If you can get people excited about your business before the event starts, they will head straight for your stand when they arrive and you will have a big crowd all day long. Engage people by posting pictures and videos of some of the things that you will be showcasing at the event, and you can even hold online polls to ask what kind of things people want to see. This builds excitement and leaves a lasting impression after the event.

Research Your Competitors
Researching the competition is important if you want to stand out. If you don’t know what you’re up against, you may come up with a great idea for a unique stand, only to find out that there are 5 other businesses doing the exact same thing. But if you search for other businesses online and see what they have done at past events, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect. Then, you can create something that nobody else is likely to do, so your business sticks in people’s minds.

Next time you attend a business event, follow these simple tips to make sure that you stand out.
