With the entrepreneurial spirit stronger than ever on Queensland’s Gold Coast and more and more creatives and business owners branching out to do their own thing, co-working spaces have become a staple for those who work from home but need an alternative to change-up their week. Finding such a space with pink couches, neon signs and lush greenery seems impossible right…until we discovered Hotel Miami: a co-working pad with a retro interior for like-minded folk. We spoke with co-owner Jessie Jones about how the pink inspired dream came to life, what’s on offer and the scoop on the benefits of a co-working space.
How did the concept for Hotel Miami come about and what was the journey to opening day like?
My husband Nicka and I had been talking about opening a creative studio for a couple of years and kept casually looking around at different spaces but hadn’t come across the right one yet. We had been working from home out of our tiny second bedroom and we were dying for a fun creative space to go to work and collaborate with like-minded people and there wasn’t anything like that on the coast yet (at least not in the style that we were after). We were on a walk one day and happened to see a for lease sign in the window of what would become Hotel Miami! We made an appointment to see it the next morning and it was exactly what we needed. We partnered up with our good friend Darran Franks and Hotel Miami was born that week. Darran has a background in advertising and graphic design so once we came up with the name he did up a logo and we hit the ground running! We signed the lease early February 2018 and opened the following month in March (it’s nearly our first birthday!). We had no idea what we were doing but somehow we turned an old cabinet warehouse into the epic pink wonderland that it is today.
What is on offer?
We are primarily a co-working space for creatives or people who want something different to the corporate scene. We’ve got super speedy wi-fi and a water cooler to gossip by just like any standard office but we also have a plush pink couch and a neon F*** Yeah sign on the wall so I think we definitely have a bit of a fun vibe going on. People can come and rent a desk for a day, a week, or they can rent a desk full-time (we’re nearly full with only two desks left at the moment!). We are also a photo studio with built-in cyclorama wall for photo shoots, a lot of people like shooting on our pink exterior wall also. In the evenings and on weekends we open our doors to all sorts of different workshops from flower crown making to screenwriting. We also do a monthly event called First Fridays where we showcase a new artist’s work on the first Friday of every month.
What are some of the benefits of a co-working space?
There are so many benefits to co-working, there are so many people who were like us working from home by themselves. I remember thinking that working from home was going to be the best thing ever, but once I was working from home I found it so distracting and I really missed the social aspect of working in an office. So someone who works for themselves or works remotely now has the opportunity to go to a workspace and be surrounded by like-minded people who they can bounce ideas off of and network with. I can easily say that every person that works at Hotel Miami has gotten more business just be being here and meeting other people that come through. It’s also just so great to be able to go to work, and then go home and leave work at work. I found it really hard to separate work and home life when I worked from home.

How do you think the way we work and running a business has changed and will continue to evolve in 2019 and beyond?
I think that the number of people working for themselves and starting their own businesses has skyrocketed in the last couple years, people want more of a work life balance and that’s really achievable these days. I think there’s going to be more and more people having the capability to work remotely as the internet gets better and then perhaps more and more need for fun co-working spaces 🙂
Highlight for Hotel Miami since opening?
We’ve had a few epic highlights in this first year, one of the biggest highlights for me is just the epic crew of people who has accumulated here. We’re so lucky to have so many fun and like-minded people that have chosen to have a desk here with us at Hotel. I love coming to work everyday and seeing everyone, as cliché as it sounds we’ve become a family! We’ve also had some epic events, First Fridays has been super well received by the community and each one gets better and better. I love seeing what the photographers that shoot in our studio have been able to produce as well. OH also the biggest highlight for me would be when we painted the building pink and completed our transformation!
Thank you so much Jessie for sharing the story of your amazing space, and we total agree with the pink transformation! To book your desk, creative photo shoot or event, head over to the website and stay up to date with all things Hotel Miami on Instagram.
